Blessings: Feast of St. Luke, Patron Saint of Physicians

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

As many of you know I spent a large portion of my career in Catholic Health Care. Several years a go a dear friend and VP of Mission at one of my facilities gave me the following blessing on a laminated card that resides in my office today. I am touched by the words of this prayer each time I read them.

On this day before Thanksgiving, I think it is appropriate to offer it to all front line health workers (although it was originally written for physicians).

May the light of your soul guide you.

May you always hold a true realization of the rare privilege that is yours.

May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light and renewal.

May God continue to bless the skill of your hands, the vision of your mind and the tenderness of your heart.

May those whom the world discards and devalues, find a home in your heart.

May your soul find the graciousness to rise above the mediocrities you encounter.

May integrity be the first ideal that guides and blesses your ministry.

May your own vulnerabilities find healing.

At day's end may you go into your home blessed, sheltered and protected.

Amen.

I offer this prayer with deep gratitude and appreciation for each of you who put your life on the line each day to care for others, especially during this current pandemic. Thank you!
