Physician Leadership Coaching
Whether you realize it or not, physicians, by virtue of their education and expertise, are leaders in healthcare. Often this leadership is informal, such as in the clinical environment where the healthcare team looks to the physician as the leader, or committee participation where the committee membership and formal leadership structure defer to the opinions of the physicians on the committee. At other times physicians have sought out or been asked to take on formal leadership roles.

Unfortunately, the skills physicians have learned in their formal medical training often leave them ill prepared for leadership roles. As a physician and coach with over 30 years experience, I have helped numerous physicians develop the skills to successfully assume leadership positions within their organizations.
Development opportunities include:
Career progression
Influencing others
Effective communication
Managing up
Developing leadership presence
Creating high performing teams
Conflict resolution
Well-being

Improving Individual Effectiveness-Behavioral Coaching
In his book, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, Marshall Goldsmith points out that the skills that make us successful in our current position often aren’t the skills needed to allow us to progress to the next level and be successful in new areas of responsibility.
Through the judicious use of assessments and self reflection I can help you identify and develop key behaviors necessary for you to be successful in your current role and prepare you for positions of greater responsibility and accountability.
Development opportunities include:
Abundance mindset
Communicating effectively
Time management
Influencing others

To be successful, however, requires careful preparation and planning.
Having served in multiple roles at many different levels in numerous organizations, I have the experience and expertise to help you chart your career course no matter what your goal.

Change Leadership
Change is a reality in healthcare and the rate of change seems to be increasing at an exponential rate, especially in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic. To be successful, leaders must learn to champion and lead change initiatives.
In my clinical and administrative roles I have been tasked with numerous redesign projects. These projects have given me the understanding of change leadership that will help you successfully arrive at your project destination.
Development opportunities include:
Assessing change readiness
Change management
Communicating effectively
Engaging staff

Relationship Coaching
In all organizations, managing relationships between various members of the staff is one of the keys to success. In healthcare there is increasingly interdependence between multiple departments that require departmental boundaries be broken down in order to assure patient care is optimized.
Utilizing concepts from Teaming theory and Relational Coordination theory, I can help you enhance relationships within your organization to ensure a high performing culture.
Development opportunities include:
Engaging staff
Managing conflict
Stakeholder engagement
Fostering collaboration
“Disruptive Physician” Coaching
“Disruptive physician” is an unfortunate label that is often affixed to physicians that, under specific circumstances, exhibit dysfunctional behaviors that undermine the optimal functioning of their teams.
After 3 decades in healthcare I have yet to meet a physician who wakes up in the morning and thinks, “I’m going to be disruptive today”. The “disruptive” physicians I have met are well meaning physicians, who care deeply for their patients and the members of their team. It is typically under stress that they exhibit behaviors that disrupt the individuals and the teams around them.
Through the use of my TREC framework I have been able to help these physicians become constructive members of interprofessional teams and of the medical staffs of the organizations in which they are members.
Well-Being Coaching
Over the past several years there has been an increasing recognition that burnout is rampant in US healthcare settings to the point that some have called burnout in healthcare a public health crisis. At Compass Executive Coaching we believe that well-being is more than the absence of burnout, and the solution to burnout is more than building resilience. We work with individuals and organizations to identify and eliminate obstacles to a productive work environment, as well as work to enhance the resilience of our member clients. We utilize selective assessments to identify behavioral opportunities that can enhance professional and personal meaningfulness.
